Success Story for Narelle Geary
In August 2008, my 82 year old mother won a major prize at the Quota Int Coolum Beach Cent Auction – 3 month membership at Fitness Plus courtesy of Dianna and Jerome. We all had a good laugh imagining Mum at the Gym. Eventually I warmed to the idea of giving it a try. Me going to a gym, now that’s a new concept!! Have never liked the idea of gyms – sweat and tight fitting lycra?
Anyway I had a chat with Dianna and made the appointment for the 1st session by mid September and as they say in the classics – the rest is history. Well not quite. A little bit of history… I was a 40yr old Phys Ed teacher when I had a stroke which has left me with right hemiparesis ( my leg and arm don’t work properly), very lucky really considering the alternatives. Meanwhile 17 years later I was overweight and unfit and a "bit disabled”. Soo……
That first gym session was challenging to say the least – could just manage 10 minutes on the recumbent bike at Level 1 and we found what I could and couldn’t do. I slept very well that night. Have always responded well to challenges. I made up my mind, just kept plugging away and found that I was getting fitter. In January Pete and I signed up for a 12 month membership.
Here I am 9 months later, now doing 45 minutes at average level 11 on the bike and other levels have improved too. Also joined Weight Watchers late last year and have lost 19 kilos. So all in all I am in much better health – BP down to 125/81, resting pulse 66, cholesterol down to 4.0 - fitter, thinner and positive attitude. Very happy and I attribute it all to just keeping going consistently. Never let whatever might come your way stop from reaching your goals. Dianna, Jerome and staff are always helpful and encouraging. Thank you.
Later this month we are going attempt to climb Mt Kinabalu (4095m), Sabah – another challenge!! Surprising what a consistent effort can do…
